The Fuld Service Learning Fellowship provides a 50% tuition scholarship for Accelerated BSN+MSN (ABSN+MSN) students who have a special commitment to social responsibility as acomponent of professional nursing practice. Candidates should have a prior history of social responsibility activities and have definitive plans to work with under-served populations in the United States or abroad. The Fuld Service Learning Fellowship provides for 50 percent tuition to cover four (4) semester of the baccalaureate program and four (4) semester of the master’s program.

The studies and experiences of Fuld Fellows are further defined through the school's social responsibility programs such as the Farm Worker Family Health Program and Alternative Winter and Spring Break Trips. These and other opportunities for the Fuld Fellows are coordinated through the Lillian Carter Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility. After graduation, Fuld Fellows will re-enter their careers as master’s prepared nurses with a deep working knowledge of health issues for vulnerable people in the US and internationally, coupled with a strong sense of direction and mission for realistically addressing these problems.

The Fuld Fellowships are made possible through a grant from the Helene Fuld Health Trust.

Kate Dirks

Kathryn DirksKate is an AMSN student in the Family Nurse Practitioner/Certified Nurse Midwife program. Her interests include women’s health care for medically underserved populations, and improving global maternal-newborn health. She comes to nursing from a biological research background, studying insect-borne illness at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Social Responsibility and Leadership: Kate serves on the board of Health Students Taking Action Together (HealthSTAT), a non-profit that advocates for social justice and improved health policy in Georgia.

Kara Slavoski

Kara Slavoski Kara is an AMSN student in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program. She comes to Emory from Vanderbilt University, where she pursued a self-designed curriculum investigating the intersection between Biology, Psychology, Neuroscience, and Sociology. She also majored in Spanish and was a participant in Global Medical Brigades, a nonprofit health and sustainable development organization. This led her on two medical mission trips to Panama and Nicaragua as an interpreter and health educator. As a four-year student-athlete on the track and cross-country teams, she was involved in Girls on the Run, a nonprofit running program promoting healthy lifestyles among elementary age girls. Her academic interests include the interdependence of mental and physical health in the adolescent population as well as pediatric oncology.

Social Responsibility and Leadership: Kara currently serves as a board member at New American Pathways, a non-profit organization focused on service to the refugee population in Atlanta.

Mckenzie Clark

Mckenzie ClarkMckenzie is an MSN candidate in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. She received a degree in Human Health from Emory University where she had the opportunity to live in Paris and study the French Healthcare System. Mckenzie has spent time volunteering in a medical clinic in rural Ghana and worked at the Emory Vaccine Center assisting with research on malaria.

Social Responsibility and Leadership: Mckenzie is a member of the advisory board for Community Friendship, Inc., a nonprofit that provides recovery-based mental health services to adults in metropolitan Atlanta. She also serves as an AMSN Peer Advisor and a volunteer for Emory Autism Center.

Parissa Salimian

Parissa SalimianParissa is an AMSN student in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. Prior to attending Emory, she was a City Year AmeriCorps Member where she served an underperforming Boston public high school.  Following this, she worked as a clinical research coordinator at Boston Children’s Hospital for projects focused on youth with chronic medical conditions, specifically substance use prevention and the collection of patient-reported outcomes. Parissa has passion for adolescent health issues in primary care.

Social Responsibility and Leadership: Parissa is a board member of Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, a non-profit organization focused on the equitable distribution of affordable housing – a critical social determinant of health.

Christina Hagan

Christina HaganChristina is an AMSN student in the Certified Nurse Midwife program. As a 2010 Teach for America Corps members in Hawai'i, Christina taught middle school math while earning a Masters of Education in Teaching. Christina has experience in public health, and previously designed and evaluated health education and training programs for underserved communities. During her undergraduate studies at Emory, Christina taught advocacy and communication with the Atlanta Urban Debate League's Community Assisted Debate project.

Social Responsibility and Leadership: Christina is board member of the C5 Georgia Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization that inspires high-potential youth from risk-filled environments to pursue personal success and provide leadership roles in college, work, and their communities.



  • Must be an Accelerated BSN + MSN (ABSN + MSN) student who has demonstrated a special commitment to scholarship, leadership and social responsibility as a component of professional nursing practice
  • Available to students who can reasonably return to school with only financial support from the Fellowship program
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 of above (the average GPA of previous recipients is a 3.71)
  • GRE score of at least a 310 (the average GRE score of previous recipients is a 318)


Recipients of the Fuld Service Learning Fellowship are expected to:

  • Spend additional time on Fuld Fellowship interdisciplinary seminars and activities
  • Remain committed to leadership activities related to social responsibility
  • Share their experiences with others in the School
  • Complete a MSN degree at Emory University
  • Demonstrate to the profession and the broader public a fine example of nursing leadership and engagement in socially responsible nursing

Applications are not accepted for this award. All students are automatically reviewed for this award during the admission review process and will be notified individually if they are chosen to receive the award.
