Farmworker Family Health Program

Moultrie Family Farmworker Program

Farmworker Health

The Farmworker Family Health Program is an interprofessional, in-country cultural immersion service learning experience.

Each summer in June, select undergraduate and graduate students from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, University of Georgia School of Pharmacy, Georgia State University Department of Physical Therapy, Clayton State University and Darton College Departments of Dental Hygiene spend two weeks delivering vital health care to farmworkers and their children in a farming community in southwest Georgia.

Partnering with The Ellenton Farmworker Clinic, the program is centered in agriculturally rich southwest Georgia. Students are housed in the Hampton Inn in Moultrie, Georgia in Colquitt County. Counties served by the Ellenton Clinic are Colquitt, Cook, Brooks and Tift. Each day students deliver preventive care (screenings and well child physicals) to children of migrant workers attending a county sponsored summer school. Evenings are spent delivering episodic care to farmworkers at farms or housing areas.

Undergraduate Course Credit

For undergraduate students, the Moultrie Family Farmworker program serves as students' Public Health Nursing Course (NRSG 461). Class is held each day from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. for three weeks prior to the trip. The class is required in order to attend the two week immersion experience.

Graduate Course Credit

For graduate students, this experience gives students 90 hours of clinical credit. A directed reading is also required and students are requested to attend the entire two week immersion experience.

ALL students are required to pay $150 to defray the cost of the hotel. Students are responsible for their own transportation and costs associated with that transportation.

Undergraduate Student Expenses and Requirements

Undergraduate students are required to pay an Emory University residency fee of approximately $175 (may change annually) to cover insurance and student fees. Undergraduate tuition for this course is not due until Spring semester of the following year.

Undergraduate students have course requirements after leaving Moultrie that requires both personal and group effort.

Graduate Student Expenses and Requirements

Graduate students are registered for courses during the summer and incur no additional tuition costs.
