BSN Honors Program

Eligibility

The BSN Honors Program provides a challenging academic experience for our most intellectually gifted, motivated, and inquisitive students. Participation in this program will involve working with core research centers in the School of Nursing and working with their team to produce a publication and present an abstract at a scientific conference. Through this program, we would like for students to pursue graduate Ph.D. training. This program will be a great bridge that will allow students to more easily apply and successfully pursue a PhD and become a research scholar.

Students in the BSN Honors Program have the opportunity to explore issues that are relevant to nursing and society. BSN Honors Program participants build a dynamic collaborative network through both their small group of peer students in each cohort and with research core areas of the school including, Data science, Aging and Neuroscience, Cancer, Palliative Care, Environmental Health, Maternal and Child Health, Center for Healthcare History and Policy, and Injury Prevention. BSN Honors students will participate in a two-year research project under the direction of core team and are exposed to a range of innovative methods of inquiry. Throughout their experience, Honors students develop leadership skills and an appreciation of nurses’ social responsibility. In addition to four semesters of specifically designed Honors classes, Honors students conduct a research or scholarly project, write a thesis suitable for publication, and publicly present their research project at a professional conference. The thesis can include, but is not limited to, a research project, policy analysis, leadership project, or health promotion project. Each Honors student will receive intensive mentoring from a research core team who are experts in their area of interest. Graduates are recognized for their honors work at the time of graduation with the distinctions of Honors, High Honors or Highest Honors.

Eligibility

After a competitive review process, admission to the BSN Honors Program is available to a select group of exemplary students. The faculty selection process evaluates student academic abilities and potential contributions to the profession based on review of student academic records and a written essay. Please select a core of interest and describe in your essay why you are interested in pursuing research with this core research group.

To be eligible:

  • Students must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Exceptions to the 3.5 GPA requirement may be made by the Honors Program Committee on an individual basis.
  • Students must be obtaining their first bachelor's degree.
